WayOUT's Inaugural Gayla & Charity Auction

Jul 13 7:00 pm
  • Address:
Public Works, 161 Erie Street, San Francisco California 94103

We are hosting an inaugural Gayla this year - a charity auction to benefit the Magic City Acceptance Center (MCAC) in Birmingham, Alabama. Alabama is one of the “No Promo Homo” states, with laws that “expressly forbid teachers from discussing gay and transgender issues” and the state’s sex education program has a mandate that “classes must emphasize, in a factual manner and from a public health perspective, that homosexuality is not a lifestyle acceptable to the general public and that homosexual conduct is a criminal offense under the laws of the state." These laws foster an extremely unsafe environment and create an official channel for discrimination – think: bullying and heightened risk of suicide, think apprehension to report assault or abuse to an educator, think blocking accurate information regarding sexual education.

We want to do anything we can to affect change in such a highly rejecting environment. On July 13th, 7pm at Public Works in SF, we will bring together members of the Bay Area community for an open bar + apps, photo booth, live/silent auction, and some musical performances by local artists. We would love to chat more if you were interested in partnering and sharing some details about our event!
