What a day! Congratulations
to the thousands of couples who were married in San Francisco four
years ago. Today, the Supreme Court of California recognized that your
committed and loving relationships are as valid as any other.
This
is am amazing victory for all Californians who cherish fairness and
opportunity. The LGBT community represents an extremely diverse group
of people who share a common respect for an individual's right to marry
the person they love. The Court's decision affirms this community
value, one that is shared by a majority of Californians.
Our
community has united in unprecedented ways to fight for the civil
rights represented by marriage. In this fight we have experienced
incredible leadership from the National Center for Lesbian Rights,
Equality California, and the many other civil rights, faith-based and
LGBT organizations who have come together to lead these efforts. We
commend the bravery of the plaintiffs in this case who literally put
their lives and relationships on trial. We honor the leadership
provided by the individuals who led the campaign and the advocates who
argued this case before the courts. Special appreciation goes to Mayor
Gavin Newsom, who has been an amazing ally to our community throughout
this challenge.
Today,
I am especially proud to be the Executive Director of the San Francisco
LGBT Community Center, representing a community that has been so deeply
committed to this important cause.
Please
join us this evening (5/15) at 5:00 PM for a community gathering to
celebrate this incredible victory. We will be joined by representatives
of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Equality California,
plaintiffs from the case, and political, civic and community leaders.
This event is a Celebration of Love and Family and will include
activities for children.
Today
is a day that we will remember throughout history as the day the
Supreme Court of California ensured that all Californians are treated
fairly and equally under the law.
With Pride and Joy,

Rebecca Rolfe
