| "Hogwarts Express: The Musical!" and "Soul Selections"
(San Francisco - May 4, 2007) The San Francisco LGBT Community Center (The Center) is proud to announce an evening of world premiere one-act performance pieces to be showcased on May 11th and 12th.
Hogwarts Express: The Musical!
Hogwarts Express the Musical brings a queer sensibility to the stories of Harry Potter while also using the Harry Potter medium to present messages of social justice to the public. A new and innovative drag production, Hogwarts Express tells the tale of popular characters from the Harry Potter series showcasing the trials and tribulations of being LGBT youth, working for social justice, and building community. The musical both critiques and celebrates the culture, politics and struggles of LGBTQ communities.
Soul Selections
Reprising some original characters from her 2006 comedy "Where My Girls At?", Micia Mosely will once again share the truth about Black Lesbian life in the 21st century. This time, the characters challenge some of the phobias and -isms that plague our society while reflecting on love, sex and soul-power. Audiences will remember why every month should be Black/Women's/LGBTQI Her-history month!
These new productions from local artists are being presented by LaunchPad, a new arts program at The Center. LaunchPad will feature the work of emerging queer artists, with particular emphasis on those artists representing segments of our community who are commonly less visible or marginalized; including people of color, transgender people and women..
"The Center is so pleased to spotlight this vibrant arts scene for the LGBT community in San Francisco," said Bryan Burgess, Events Coordinator at The Center. "The performing arts are undoubtedly an integral part of the how our vibrant community learns and grows. We hope to contribute to a long history of art and performance acting as catalysts for substatantial social change."
LGBT art and performance space in San Francisco continues to become more and more scarce. Few opportunities exist for emergent LGBT artists in San Francisco to present their work and receive the support and nurturance necessary to continue doing so. The Center's new LaunchPad program aims to respond to this dilemma by producing and promoting shows by emerging LGBT artists on an ongoing basis, beginning this Spring. LaunchPad is a collaborative endeavor, providing artists free performance and rehearsal space, while raising funds for both the artists and The Center through ticket sales.
"LaunchPad is an extremely exciting new program here at The Center," said Rebecca Rolfe, The Center's Deputy Director. "Our building has been a host to countless visual art shows, and it's great to be in a position to support our community's theater and performance artists. In the midst of a community with a significant history of organizing, The Center continues to develop innovative programs, such as LaunchPad, that fill gaps in available programs and guide the community's aspirations to a new level."
