News: Hurricane Katrina Disaster

The disaster that struck the Gulf Coast last weekend still staggers. The scenes of suffering are heart wrenching. If you would like to help, The San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center has the following suggestions:

There will be a fundraiser at El Rio, 3158 Mission Street on Friday night starting at 9 PM. Funds will be raised for Second Harvest Food Banks through the Rainbow Fund, so the money will be tagged as LGBT donations. Cindy Emch's open mic night at the 3 Dollar Bill Cafe will also benefit relief efforts.

As you know, many our community will have extra hurdles to clear. All three of the affected states do not recognize domestic partnerships, and people who have lost a partner may not be eligible for survivor benefits and other aid. Many of the relief agencies also do not take into account someone's sexual orientation.

If you prefer to give clothes or food we forward the following message from one of our sister community centers here in the City:

ELLA HILL HUTCH COMMUNITY CENTER LAUNCHES DONATION DRIVE FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE NEW ORLEANS AND GULF COAST TRAGEDY

SAN FRANCISCO - The Ella Hill Hutch Community Center will sponsor a citywide donations drive of clothing, food, and other non perishable items to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. George Smith, III, Executive Director of the center located in the Western Addition community, states "The purpose of the drive is to organize our community to take action and help the masses of victims in the south."

The Ella Hill Hutch Community Center is asking San Francisco to help send a message of love and support to the victims of the most catastrophic event in our country's history. Please donate what you can and we will ensure that your generous gift is received by those in need.

Beginning on Saturday, September 3, 2005 through Friday, September 30, 2005 from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM please deliver clothing, food, and other non perishable items at The Ella Hill Hutch Community Center located at 1050 McAllister Street (@Webster) in San Francisco's Western Addition.
