It
is almost certain the governor will VETO the "Religious
Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act" AB 849 authored
by our very own Assemblymember Mark Leno which would make
California the first state to enact marriage equality through
legislative action.
As you know, within less than 24 hours of the legislative
victory, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared he would
veto the bill. Just as dozens of people were gathering to
celebrate the historic success, the governor was releasing
a written statement announcing his veto. We did not even
have the chance to pop the corks on the champagne bottles.
Despite the best efforts of the Center and other groups
throughout the state, it appears that the governor will set
his legacy with blocking the rights of Californians. With
this veto, we must continue to shake that bottle until the
cork flies off, and no celebration of equality can be diminished.
We must show the depth of our feelings about what is happening.
The
day the Governor acts we will join together as a community
to respond. We will rally at 5:00 pm at Harvey Milk Plaza,
(corner of Castro & Market) and then march to the LGBT
Center (corner of Market and Octavia) for another rally.
When he vetoes the bill, we will express our deep disappointment
with the Governor's failed leadership and speak out about
the real harm that marriage discrimination causes LGBT people.
Either way, we will celebrate the incredible gains we have
made over the last year and reaffirm our determination to
continue our struggle until we achieve full equality.
Will
we distribute "I Do" pins and bumper stickers
to help you show your support of marriage equality.
