Community & Policy Initiatives

Truly a nexus of our community, The Center is committed to cultivating opportunities for individuals to become involved. We are confident that volunteerism and civic participation are at the heart of individual and community empowerment.

A key component of the Center's mission is to nurture small and emerging groups and those serving marginalized groups within our community.

Center Women Present
Center Women Present (CWP) was started at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center in August 2006. The group serves all self-identified women, including lesbians, queer, bisexual, and transgender community members. The program intends to address women's community issues through volunteer-led projects and is shaped primarily by input of community members, with assistance of The Center's staff.

San Francisco LGBTQ Speakers Bureau
The San Francisco LGBTQ Speakers Bureau aims to bring an end to homophobia and transphobia by educating people about the lives of those in our community. We believe that through open and honest dialogue about issues pertaining to sexual orientation and gender identity, we can foster greater understanding of our common humanity, resulting in healthier, safer communities for everyone.

We speak to elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as to adults in community colleges and work settings. By personalizing the realities of LGBTQ people, we can break down stereotypes which might otherwise lead to ongoing marginalization and violence against members of our communities.

SF TEAM - San Francisco Transgender Empowerment Advocacy and Mentorship
SFTEAM is active in commemorating the heritage of transgender people, empowering and nurturing transgender and gender-variant individuals; and increasing visibility to promote positive social change. The Center seeks to foster civic participation (political education, debates, and voter registration), leadership development (volunteer training, mentoring and referral), and access to information and resources. These efforts strengthen the LGBT community's already vital spirit of volunteerism. As a central resource for volunteerism, The Center is an intermediary, linking volunteers with other LGBT organizations, as well as providing volunteer opportunities at The Center.

The Center also aims to actively enhance and fortify allied organizations by offering a range of direct technical assistance, meeting rooms, office space, and event space.
