Resisting Hate

Last Saturday was a day that tested our community’s strength and resilience. Thousands of us gathered across the city to demonstrate that San Francisco does not welcome racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, transphobia, homophobia, sexism and violence against our communities.

I am honored to serve as the SF LGBT Center’s Interim Executive Director while our Executive Director Rebecca Rolfe is on sabbatical until early December. In such capacity, I was humbled to speak at Juanita MORE!’s Come Together rally and march. It was truly inspiring joining so many amazing voices within our community. We thank Juanita for her leadership in organizing the event and Cleve Jones for establishing NoHateSF.org, which is raising funds for community groups impacted by hate and violence. If you haven’t donated yet, you can still make a contribution to the fund here. The monies raised will support us and many of our partners, including API Wellness, Muslim Advocates, and the Transgender Law Center.

Our work is far from over. We have a president in the White House who fosters hate, division, violence, and—within his first months in office—has crafted an agenda that directly attacks our communities.

Today, I urge you to recommit to fighting for racial, economic, gender, and social justice. This week is not only a moment to celebrate our unity and strength, but also to roll up our sleeves and champion a cause that moves us forward in our path to full equality. This is the moment to volunteer, to donate, to get involved more than ever before.

Community has never been more important and my heart is grateful knowing that we have come together to resist and share our strength. Thank you for sharing this moment, and thank you to all the leaders and activists who came before us whose shoulders we stand on. This is for our future.
