The Alice B. Toklas Memorial Democratic Club of San Francisco was the first registered Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Democratic Club in the nation. Forming only two years after the Stonewall riots in the infancy of the LGBT civil rights movement, Alice grew to become a vibrant organization that has made a profound impact on San Francisco, California and American politics. Alice made its impact by training activists over four decades to become political professionals and electing candidates that have fought for the issues that are important to the LGBT community. The club has been instrumental in growing new leaders who would rise to the highest levels of government in the nation, such as Dianne Feinstein, an early friend of the club. Alice has been critical to the fight for LGBT leaders to win office, such as Mark Leno, the first gay man elected to the California State Senate. These leaders have helped make San Francisco the epicenter of the LGBT political movement, advancing causes such as equal benefits, domestic partnership, transgender health care, and marriage equality. Alice continues to be a major player in local, state and national politics and remains an inspiring and effective organization to this day.

African American men who are gay, bisexual and same gender loving are at a disproportionately higher risk for HIV infection. Black Brothers Esteem, or BBE, works to change that. It’s a prevention and support program from San Francisco AIDS Foundation to empower men who predominantly live in the Tenderloin/Polk Gulch and Sixth Street Corridor neighborhoods of San Francisco. These men struggle not only with issues related to HIV, but also with racism, addiction, poverty, homophobia, violence and marginal housing. Facilitated by our expert staff, Black Brothers Esteem designs activities and events to provide a place for African American men to gather and to gain support from each other. The goal: provide education, skills and enhanced social connections to reduce sexual risk-taking.

On a local level, SFLGFB is the Official Band of San Francisco, having been given that honor by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in honor of the Band’s 20th and 25th anniversaries. Founded in 1978 by Jon Sims at the height of Anita Bryant’s anti-gay crusade, the Band has made music to build understanding among communities of all sexual orientations and identities for more than three decades. SFLGFB first appeared in public when it marched up Market Street behind Harvey Milk’s convertible in the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade, an event recreated in the Oscar-winning film “Milk.”
