Stepping Into My Power

As a queer, Black, and Indigenous individual, reclaiming my identity and stepping into my power has been a journey fraught with challenges. However, through the unwavering support of the Center, I have found the courage to embrace every facet of who I am.

Two years ago, when I first walked through the doors of the SF LGBT Center, I was seeking connection and belonging in a city that often felt overwhelming. What I discovered was far beyond my expectations: a supportive community, passionate advocates like Nick and Timothy from the Community Programs and Cultural Programs teams, and an opportunity to make a meaningful difference through teaching yoga for the Center’s Queer and Well program.

As a queer, Black, and Indigenous individual, reclaiming my identity and stepping into my power has been a journey fraught with challenges. However, through the unwavering support of the Center, I have found the courage to embrace every facet of who I am. From my name, Kiana Katela Charles, symbolizing the spirit of family and resilience, to my chosen identity as Ki, reflecting my androgynous nature.

The impact of Queer & Well extends far beyond the confines of a yoga mat. It serves as a beacon of hope for individuals who, like me, once felt unseen and unheard.

Imagine, for a moment, the power of a space where every individual—regardless of background or identity—feels seen, valued, and embraced for who they are. That is the vision driving my Queer & Well classes, and it’s a vision that has transformed countless lives, including my own.

My growth is a testament to the inclusivity and profound influence that the Center’s programs have had on my life and those attending Queer & Well programs. Through this program, I’ve found a nurturing community dedicated to holistic wellness and belonging.

However, our work is far from over. As we navigate the rising anti-LGBTQ+ hate, the need for affirming, and inclusive spaces like the Center has never been greater. The Center relies critically on the generous contributions of individual community members to keep its community program offerings alive. Can you make a gift today to ensure the Center can continue providing essential resources that keep our community vibrant?

As we embrace Pride’s vibrant spirit, I’m excited to share the transformative impact your support can have on the LGBTQ+ community. Your donation is critical to sustaining vital Center programs like Queer & Well and ensures the Center can continue to provide sanctuary and holistic support for LGBTQ+ individuals for many years to come.

Join me in celebrating the beauty of queer resilience and wellness this Pride season. Together, let us sow the seeds of hope, belonging, and transformation within our community.
